KLSA Activities
Natural Edge
KLSA is a regional delivery partner of Watersheds Canada’s Natural Edge Program. The Natural Edge is a shoreline naturalization program available to waterfront property owners to plant native trees, shrubs, groundcovers, wildflowers, and grasses along the water’s edge.
Re-Naturalize Your Shoreline with the Natural Edge Program
Is your waterfront property in the Kawartha Lakes region in need of a shoreline makeover? The Natural Edge program is here to help! Whether you’re looking to combat erosion, enhance wildlife habitat, discourage geese, or simply beautify your land, our program offers an easy and effective way to restore and protect your shoreline.
Why are naturalized shorelines important?
Shoreline restoration offers a host of benefits for both your property and the environment.
Through the Natural Edge program, you can:
Defend Against Erosion
Help stabilize the shoreline and prevent soil loss.
Keep Geese Away
Restore natural vegetation to discourage geese from settling on your property.
Enhance Habitat
Improve biodiversity by providing essential habitats for wildlife.
Protect Water Quality
Native plants filter runoff and help keep our lakes clean.
Reduce Lawn Maintenance
Say goodbye to constant mowing and enjoy a natural, low-maintenance shoreline.
Beautify Your Land
Create a lush, scenic landscape that blends with nature.
How the Program Works
Site Visit & Consultation
Our team will visit your property to assess your shoreline’s current condition and discuss your goals for restoration.
Personalized Planting Plan
This plan includes:
- Visual representations of your shoreline restoration with photos of the planting areas.
- A description of the land characteristics of the planting area.
- Information on each native plant, shrub, and tree chosen for the planting.
We Handle the Details
Once your plan is ready, we’ll order the plants, along with necessary materials like soil, mulch, planting mats, and tree guards to help your plants thrive.
Plant Delivery & Support
KLSA volunteers will deliver your plants directly to your property. If you need assistance, we can also arrange for volunteers to help with the planting process!
Cost & Timeline
Landowners are typically asked to contribute $250 (dependent on the size of the site), which helps offset the cost of the plants and materials. This is a small investment for a long-term environmental impact and a more beautiful, functional shoreline.
It takes approximately three years for the plants to fully establish and transform your shoreline into a natural, thriving ecosystem.
